Sparrow sized bird with grey-brown plumage and a distinctive black or chestnut-brown cap.

Seen mainly as a summer visitor in gardens and deciduous woodland or scrub in all areas apart from the north west of the UK. Most of the birds we see in the summer do not overwinter in the UK, but spend most of the winter in Europe or Africa.

Blackcaps are insect-eaters, enjoying caterpillars and flies. In the garden, they will sometimes visit bird tables for mealworms or suet.
