A large attractive bird of the Finch family, the Bullfinch is quiet-natured and gentle.

It is found throughout much of the UK and Ireland, often in dense forest, hedgerow and scrub all year round. The male is especially pretty, having a red-pink belly, grey back and a black head. The female is similar, but the red belly is a duller pale brown.

Bullfinches mostly feed on insects, seeds and berries and may visit orchards to eat the blossom of fruit trees. They sometimes visit the garden and will take mixed seeds or suet from hanging feeders.
