Green Woodpecker

A large Woodpecker species with green back, pale green belly and with red and black facial features.

The Green Woodpecker frequents open, deciduous woodland in England, Wales and southern Scotland. They will use their sharp, strong bill to excavate wood to find insect larvae and to make a nesting site. The "yaffle" sound can indicate their presence in woodland.

An infrequent visitor to gardens, they may sometimes be seen using their tongue to remove ants from a lawn.
