Ring-necked Parakeet

An unexpected bird to find in the UK, the Ring-necked Parakeet is emerald green, long green-blue tail and a red bill. The male has a pink and black collar.

These birds escaped from captivity in the 1970s and started breeding in the south of England. Now there are thousands of individuals and their range extends north into Yorkshire. They are noisy birds with a high-pitched screeching squark.

The reason they are mentioned here is because they are frequent garden visitors, taking wild bird seed from tables and feeders. Their natural foods are seeds and fruits as well as nectar from flowers.
