Sparrowhawk

A bird of prey, the Sparrowhawk has grey-brown upper body and pale (female) or reddish brown (male) barred belly. They have a long tail and yellow eye.

A common and widespread bird that recovered from a population dip in the mid twentieth century.

They are frequently seen around gardens because of their common diet of small birds - often taking sparrows and finches but also larger birds such as blackbirds. They are not always successful in their hunting, taking a few attempts to get their prey.
